The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador conducted a major survey in 2007 to learn more about the habits of student in Grades 7, Grade 9, Level I and Level III in this province. You might be surprised by the results!
  • 52% of students had drunk alcohol within the past year.
  • The average age that students first use alcohol is 12.9.
  • About 16% of students with a driver's license drove a vehicle within an hour of having used alcohol.
  • 17% of students were passengers in a vehicle with an alcohol-impaired driver on at least one occasion in the course of the year.
  • About 30% of students with a driver's license drove a vehicle within an hour of having used cannabis.
  • About 22% of students were passengers in a vehicle driven by a person who had used cannabis.
  • Of those teens who had sexual intercourse, about 35% had unplanned sexual intercourse while under the influence of a substance on at least one occasion during the year.
  • Patterns of use were the same among males and females.
  • About 34% of students have tried cannabis at some point and 30% used cannabis in the year prior to the survey. The average age they first tried it was 13.5.
  • 30% of students have never drank alcohol at all.
  • About 30% of students report having smoked cigarettes at some point. 17% smoked in the year prior to the survey.
  • By the age of 23 most youth in this province have tried gambling - those that started between the ages of 13-18 were much more likely to become problem gamblers.
